Sherine Chong (56 tuổi) được cho là đã đầu độc 5 người còn lại bằng xyanua vì lý do nợ nần.
Về động cơ nghi phạm sử dụng xyanua để đầu độc mọi người và sau đó là chính mình, nguyên nhân là do khoản nợ 10 triệu baht (khoảng 7 tỷ đồng). Trước đó, nhóm người này đã hẹn đi Nhật nhưng có người không được chấp nhận visa nên đã hẹn nhau sang Thái Lan bàn chuyện làm ăn.
Người thân của nạn nhân cho biết, nghi phạm Sherine Chong và bà N.T.P.L (47 tuổi) có hợp tác đầu tư định xây dựng một bệnh viện ở Nhật Bản. Tuy nhiên, hoạt động kinh doanh của 2 người này cần được điều tra thêm.
Trung tướng cảnh sát Trairong Pewphan, chỉ huy Văn phòng Cảnh sát Pháp y cho biết cảnh sát đã kiểm tra tang vật. Kiểm tra định tính ban đầu cho thấy chất độc giết người là xyanua, được tìm thấy trong chất lỏng trong ấm trà, vết bẩn trên 6 tách cà phê và mẫu máu của một người đàn ông.
